Cyber Funding Hits $6.8B on Bigger Rounds, Not More Deals

Crunchbase counts $6.8 billion for Q3 2026, up about 50%, while deal counts fell. A second tally lands lower, so the method matters.

Cybersecurity funding rose about 50% in Q3 2026 to $6.8 billion, per Crunchbase, but the rise came from larger rounds, not more deals. For founders, Island and Cyera show capital concentrating in a few AI-and-identity companies, while a separate tally from Calcalist, citing Pinpoint Search Group, put the quarter lower at $5.26 billion.

Global cybersecurity and privacy startups raised $6.8 billion in the third quarter of 2026, according to Crunchbase News. That is up about 50% from the prior quarter and tied for the highest quarterly tally in years. The detail that matters for founders is the composition: Crunchbase says round counts fell at every stage, so a small group of very large rounds produced the increase. A headline total can rise while the typical company finds fundraising no easier.

Larger rounds, fewer of them

Crunchbase says the funding bump was due to larger rounds, not more of them, and that round counts declined sequentially across all stages. It names three big cheques: a $1 billion growth round for Keyfactor, led by Summit Partners in July; a $400 million Series F for Island, led by Evolution Equity Partners; and a $400 million round for Cyera, led by Goldman Sachs Growth Equity. Island's post-money valuation is reported at $6.4 billion.

AI and identity absorb the capital

Crunchbase reports that AI startups took the large majority of cybersecurity funding, with a focus on identity security, and that at least 18 companies at the AI and cybersecurity intersection closed rounds of $100 million or more. Cyera's September round came three months after a $600 million raise, at a reported $12 billion valuation. Capital is following a narrow thesis, which leaves companies outside it competing for a smaller share of attention.

Two datasets, two totals

Totals depend on how a dataset defines the sector and which rounds it captures. Calcalist, citing Pinpoint Search Group data reported by the Wall Street Journal, puts Q3 2026 global cybersecurity investment at $5.26 billion, the strongest quarter since 2022, with Israeli startups about half of it. We have not seen the Pinpoint original, so that figure rests on Calcalist's account. The gap against Crunchbase's $6.8 billion is a reminder to compare like with like.

What founders outside the top tier should read from it

Crunchbase also describes exits: Visa acquired BioCatch for $2.4 billion in August, and Cyera acquired Oasis Security in a deal reportedly valued around $1 billion. Crunchbase calls the IPO market fairly sluggish, with Aura's combination with Qoria the lone sizable venture-backed market debut. The pattern is large rounds and acquisitions for category leaders. We could not verify how much of this reaches seed and Series A companies, including in the Nordics, where we found no sourced Q3 breakdown.

Verdict: treat the $6.8 billion as evidence of concentration, not a thaw. Founders in AI-agent security and identity have a real tailwind, and acquirers are paying for it. Everyone else should benchmark their round against peers at the same stage, since falling deal counts suggest the median process is not easier, and should wait for stage-level data before assuming the cycle has turned.
